Madeira Hotel - Casa Velha do Palheiro
The Casa Velha do Palheiro is a celebrated five-star country house hotel of exceptional character and year-round appeal. It was formally a hunting lodge built by the 1st Count of Carvalhal in 1801 as a summer residence.  
Marcus Binney wrote in his book The Blandy's of Madeira published in 2011: "Casa Velha was Madeira's first country-house hotel, situated 500 meters above sea level and looking on to one of the loveliest gardens on the island. The drive runs through woodland to emerge in a clearing shaded by the magnificent trees which are the hallmarks of the Palheiro gardens. The grass circle in front of the gates contains a huge multi-trunked Metrosideros or Christmas Day tree from New Zealand. As soon as you step out of the car an atmosphere of friendly informality pervades the scene. A pebbled path is bordered by flowering shrubs and flanked to the left by a bedroom block with rooms opening on to a long verandah like a plantation house in the West Indies. From the front door there is a view straight through in the garden. The staircase sets a grander note, with matching flights on either side rising to first-floor bedrooms. Doors open on to an enfilade running across the house and linking the library with the drawing room and dining room. Steps lead down to a terrace with tables and chairs. The large lawn in spring is a carpet of tiny purple oxalis flowers. To the right is another verandahed wing with bedrooms. Beyond, the garden steps down to two further terraces, one inset with a large pool stocked with goldfish and koi carp. The formality of terraces and lawns is softened by spreading trees that shade the paths. At the bottom are another immense Metrosideros and a new tea pavilion offering snacks to golfers and garden visitors. Casa Velha with Christina in charge is decorated in fresh pretty colors. The dining room has a plantation feel thanks to polished wood floors and mahogany furniture. It has been cleverly extended by a conservatory retaining the original outside windows which now provide indoor views from one room to the next".
The hotel is a member of the Relais & Châteaux establishment and provides 32 rooms and five suites, each one singular in style and personality. The sitting room and bar are comfortable, beautifully furnished, and decorated with gilt-framed oils, Madeira prints, and lithographs. Fresh flowers picked from the garden lend color and vitality. The hotel's award-winning restaurant is highly regarded, and a deserved gourmet reference point. Guests enjoy the evening atmosphere by candlelight in the elegant dining room. Breakfast is served in the sun-filled conservatory.
The Palheiro Spa, a short walk from the reception, features a veritable array of treatments and beauty therapies. The facilities include heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a Turkish bath and sauna plus a smart gymnasium which further enhances the wellbeing experience. There's an all-weather tennis court next door and the less energetic can play croquet on the lawn below the property.

Exemplifying this extraordinary fusion of taste and talent are seafood dishes such as oriental style trilogy of lobster, Sétubal oysters scented with basil and crayfish tempura, and parrotfish fillet wrapped in Swiss chard, a symphony of beans, girolles mushrooms and broccoli with clam and truffle sauce.
Beef Tournedo gratinated with a pepper crust and bordelaise sauce, or Iberian black pork symphony Portuguese style typifies the inventiveness of the meat selection.

Soups, from the humble but truly emblematic Caldo Verde, traditional Portuguese potato and shredded cabbage soup garnished with chouriço (spicy pork sausage), to the more ingenious cauliflower and curry soup with mussels, illustrate the kitchen's readiness to honor convention but at the same time experiment with the unusual.

The dining room at Madeira Island Hotel Casa Velha do Palheiro overlooks the landscaped grounds and manicured lawn at the rear of the five-star property.

Gastronomy at Palheiro Golf Clubhouse Restaurant combines local culinary tastes with a southern European flavor.
Influenced by the Atlantic and inspired by the Mediterranean – with a dash of the oriental adding a little spice – the cuisine serves to illustrate the imagination and creativity associated with the award-winning kitchen at Madeira Island Hotel Casa Velha do Palheiro, who manage the Clubhouse Restaurant.
Set under the 18th green at Madeira Island Palheiro Golf, the Clubhouse Restaurant sits high above Funchal and affords a glorious panorama of the bay, the mountains, and the Atlantic Ocean.
The Clubhouse Restaurant benefits from a unique open-plan design. A generous veranda, where that same magnificent view can be appreciated in all its splendor, further accentuates the sense of space.
Here, the environment is calm and relaxed. Golfers can enjoy pre-round coffee before their game and later unwind over a post-round drink.
Lunch is an occasion for laughter and banter, a time to replay that cracking drive, that subtle putt or that awkward bunker with friends and teammates.
The à la carte menu lists an array of appetizing starters like pan-fried prawns in Piri-Piri sauce, bang bang salad with saffron and ginger-marinated chicken, smoked salmon with asparagus, or tomato and onion soup with a poached egg – a Madeiran specialty.
Pasta choices include delicious fresh gnocchi with spinach and Gorgonzola cheese sauce, while fish dishes include local black scabbard fish sautéed with chive and mushroom sauce.
The grilled beef entrecote with either Béarnaise or pepper sauce or the chicken stroganoff with steamed rice exemplifies the meats selection.
For something lighter, the quality range of sandwiches includes healthy and nourishing options like a baguette with marinated tuna, balsamic vinegar and olives, and bruschetta with tomato confit and mozzarella cheese.
Round off the meal with any one of the dozen or so dessert choices that include almond cassata with chocolate sauce, or regional passion fruit.
Alternatively, an early dinner at Palheiro Golf Clubhouse Restaurant is an equally conducive way to end a day on the golf course. In fact, why not indulge in an aperitif on the terrace before ordering?
Actually, regardless of whether you're a golfer or not, the Clubhouse Restaurant remains a noted fine-dining venue where anyone can enjoy good food and fine wine in friendly and informal surroundings.
 
 

The Tea House

The Casa de Chá, or Tea House, enjoys a privileged position in Palheiro Gardens, right next to Palheiro Golf and Casa Velha do Palheiro country house hotel.
From tables set within the building and those on the terrace, guests are afforded pleasant views of the hotel gardens and the golf course.
Decorated with framed black and white photographs depicting Palheiro Estate in the 19th century, Casa de Chá offers teas and coffee, soup, sandwiches and salads, and a wonderful selection of homemade cakes, pastries and ice creams for visitors to the gardens as well as light snacks and refreshments for energy-burning golfers.
Casa Velha guests have direct access to the Tea House from the hotel grounds.
